James Samaroden specializes in collaborative practice and, where negotiations prove unsuccessful, litigation.
Through the collaborative family law process James ensures his clients carefully weigh emotional stresses, relationships with family and friends, financial impacts, and long-term effects before arriving at a settlement or resorting to court.
James is experienced in all areas of family law including divorce, common-law separation, child support, spousal support, parenting time, guardianship, and custody. He is also available for consultations and limited-scope representation, for drafting relationship or separation agreements, or for providing independent legal advice on agreements and minutes of settlement. He is experienced at all three court levels.
James was born and raised in Fort McMurray, Alberta and completed a Bachelor of Management, with great distinction, from the University of Lethbridge in 2005, and a Juris Doctor from University of Victoria in 2009.
While in law school James was part of the co-operative education program and completed work terms with Syncrude in Fort McMurray, AB (corporate counsel); the British Columbia Ministry and Agriculture and Lands in Victoria, B.C.; Harris & Company in Vancouver, B.C. (Employment & Labour Law); and Brown Henderson Melbye in Victoria, B.C. (Family Law).
He is a board member of the Association of Collaborative Family Professionals (Edmonton). He is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and is currently a board member of its Wills, Estate, and Trust Edmonton Chapter. He was co-chair of the Canadian Bar Association Young Lawyers Edmonton Chapter for two years ending in 2011.
He is an active member of the Orthodox Church of America and attends the St. Herman of Alaska Orthodox Sobor.
